PLAN BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Fit, dimensions & layout

Prewash and dry the fabric using its care instructions before measuring final blanks. If a finished cloth should be 250 mm square and you turn 5 mm twice at every edge, allow 10 mm on each edge and cut about 270 mm square. A cloth for delicate surfaces needs a separate surface-compatibility check; absorbency alone does not establish suitability.

Choose materials deliberately

Hand-sewn hem

It works with secure small stitches and enclosed raw edges. Budget time for the full perimeter rather than leaving corners unfinished.

Different fabric source

Use clean known fabric with enough sound area. Avoid unidentified treated cloth or material with abrasive printed, glittered, or damaged areas.

Make it, step by step

  1. Prepare the fabric

Use absorbent cotton without worn-through spots and wash as its care label directs.

  2. Mark square blanks

Allow extra for hems and keep the grain aligned.

    Check before moving on

Mark the cut size and finished size separately so the hem allowance is not counted twice.

  3. Turn the edges

Fold twice to enclose raw threads and reduce bulky corners.

  4. Stitch around

Use secure straight or hand stitches and fasten the ends.

  5. Assign and wash

Mark uses if helpful, wash between tasks, and test on a hidden area before using on delicate surfaces.

    Check before moving on

Keep cloths for different tasks separated as appropriate, and check for grit before each use.

IF SOMETHING DOES NOT FIT

Troubleshoot this project

Why are the edges fraying after washing?

What to check. The raw edge may not be fully enclosed or the stitch line may have missed the inner fold.

Next move. Inspect and resew the hem with enough fabric in the fold before reuse.

Why are the corners bulky?

What to check. Two complete double folds may overlap without a corner plan.

Next move. Test a small corner first and reduce excess allowance while keeping raw edges enclosed.

The final check

Hems are secure and the cloth is clean before each use.

A detail worth keeping

Even soft fabric can carry grit; cleanliness matters more than decoration.

FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Allow depth in a flat pattern

A two-panel remote pocket must wrap around the remote thickness, not only match its front outline. Test a felt scrap around the widest part and leave enough room for the seam. Check the stored remote does not hold a button down.
